Celeb Twitter Round-Up: “Muvhango” Gets Cancelled!

We’ve seen plenty of local TV productions getting axed in the last few years: “Isidingo”, “Rhythm City”, “The Queen” and, of course, “7de Laan”, among others. Now, yet another beloved show has become a casualty of cancellation.

Since 1997, “Muvhango” has been a staple of SABC2. Now, per a tweet from its official Twitter/X account, the soapie is effectively dead in the water after airing its last episode on Tuesday night, 2 July:

According to reports, shooting on “Muvhango” ceased on 15 June after SABC failed to extend its contract with the show’s production company, Word of Mouth Pictures. As a result, SABC will be broadcasting reruns of the Tshivenda-language soapie in its 21:00 slot, presumably until a new show can replace it.

Other reports say that Word of Mouth Pictures are currently negotiating with SABC about a new contract, but the above tweet seems emphatic about the show’s demise.

Over on Twitter/X, responses to the cancellation of “Muvhango” have been incredibly mixed, ranging from sadness …

… to what looks like relief:

Some folks were surprised (genuinely or feignedly) that “Muvhango” was still on after all these years:

Meanwhile, others reckoned that shows like “Generations” and “Skeem Saam” ought to be axed instead of (or in addition to) “Muvhango”:

Be careful what you wish for, folks, ‘cause you just might get it! And trust us, these same peeps will probably be weeping over those shows if they ever get canned.

Regardless of opinion, it’s kinda depressing to see our favourite shows coming to end, especially the ones that we grew up with. Here’s hoping that the cast and crew of “Muvhango” are able to find new opportunities elsewhere!
